biodegradable plastic

What is biodegradable plastic?

Bioplastics are a diverse class of materials with a wide range of characteristics and applications. It is not just a material, but encompasses plastics that are bio based, biodegradable, or both. In other words, bioplastics can be derived from plants, naturally biodegradable, or possess both advantages.

‘Biobased’ means that the material is partially derived from plant biomass such as corn, sugarcane, or cellulose, but this does not necessarily mean that it is biodegradable. And ‘biodegradation’ refers to the ability of materials to decompose into water, carbon dioxide, and natural compost substances through microbial action under specific conditions. The key lies in the chemical structure of the material, not its source. For example, 100% bio based materials may not necessarily be biodegradable, while 100% fossil based materials may have biodegradability.
